i find Illegal Tender for my PDA
Actors: Del Rio Michael Philip,Molina Samuel,Sepulveda Rick,Perez Manny,Benny D.C.,Escobar Ronald,Perez Gary,Gonzalez Rick,Crime,Drama,Thriller,
I need to know if this is legal?
Is it legal to pay for my ticket with $220 in pure all accounted for pennies? It is legal tender and I think it would be illegal to tell me that I can’t pay for it with it.
and can the banks deny me of my pennies?
We had a guy do that for $172. The judge ordered him detained until the money could be counted. He was placed in a holding cell while the cpirt clerk brought the money to the bank and ran it through the change counter. It took almost two hours.
I think the judge came out on top of that one.

Alex | Aug 02, 2009
As long as it’s U.S. currency they have to accept it… The person collecting the fine would think you’re a gigantic douche, but there’s nothing they can do about it.
Andrew K | Aug 02, 2009
ya its illegial its money they cant refuse it
Savannah | Aug 02, 2009
Why do you have $220 dollars in pennies?
Ashley | Aug 02, 2009
It’s legal! Theres no law against it. I’d do it just to piss of the state
Lizzie | Aug 02, 2009

mysterytwinkle1 | Aug 02, 2009
It wouldn’t be illegal, but they’d be very annoyed. lol, that would be hilarious
CHR1S | Aug 02, 2009
From what I’ve come to realize about currency and the government is,
they CAN turn down pennies, but they have to accept nickels.
Derek F | Aug 02, 2009
i dont know but i have had people say the same thing, but not that much money. go to the bank and cash it in crazy.
Hook | Aug 02, 2009
dude your genius
dude | Aug 02, 2009
It’s legal. However, if you showed up with all that and made me count them I would write my congressman and have a law passed to outlaw pennies.
big_phil22 | Aug 02, 2009

Darius | Aug 02, 2009

threeminpins4me | Aug 02, 2009
i recently saw a video on college humor where a guy did the exact same thing with a 88 dollar fine. I didnt watch the whole video, but they called the cops and the cop was on his side, so probably.
Matt | Aug 02, 2009
Sure! You’ll P then off, then they will be looking for you even more, but do what you want?
Alice C | Aug 02, 2009
No the bank wont deny you but it may take some time to get them out and all..
but that would be ammusing to do..but its not like the officer who pulled you over gets any hell from it just the clerk who takes fines..sooo yeah
bossy | Aug 02, 2009
its legal if you could get them to accept it.. but they will not.
there is no way you could get them to take that many pennies..
traffic tickets are mostly b.s, i parked at the park to play basketball, they only have it for a hour.. they know people are going to be there longer.. so they make it a hour insted of two. sick
MIXED_WON W | Aug 02, 2009
do you realize how many pennies that is? 22000 pennies… Of course it’s legal technically but just theoretical of course the weight is too much.
And yes, considering the inefficiency of copper coated zinc pennies and of metal money in general, the banks have the right to deny paying you in coins.
maples | Aug 02, 2009
pennies are NOT legal tender
If i walked into 7eleven and tried to pay 22 dollars in pennies they are aloud to refuse and would most likely not take it
Amy | Aug 02, 2009
It is only illegal if it is clearly stated somewhere that they won’t accept that as a form of payment. You could make the claim that currency of another country is legal tender and so they would have to accept that as long as you payed the amount it would convert into, but they don’t have to accept that. They can legally state that they will only accept certain forms of payment.
Banks can charge you a fee to count your pennies. Usually if you hold an account with a bank then they won’t do this, but if you don’t have an account with them then they are allowed to.
ignant_slob | Aug 02, 2009
while there is no law against paying completely in pennies, I do believe that the teller does have the right to refuse to accept payments entirely in change beyond a certain amount. (for example, you cannot pay for say, a car, entirely in change as it is just unfair to whom ever you are giving the money to have to count that volume)
Really unless you are trying to make a statement, you should just bring all your pennies to the bank and get them to change them for you.
veerin | Aug 02, 2009
im not real sure but i know that u should be able to because they still get the money. the bank might deny you for pennies because they always do things with cash. good luckk for whatever happens. and also you might not be able to pay the whole ticket with JUST pennies. you might b able to stick some quarters and dimes and stuff in there.
passion247 | Aug 02, 2009
it is legal tender yes, but vendors and agencies can refuse currency, especially if its suspect or an inconvienience for them. just like stores can say "no cash larger than 20.00 bills" or "no checks", they can refuse your pennies.
here’s the situation. you will have 440 rolls of pennies for them to count, which will take an egregious ammount of time, even if they dont open any of the rolls. if they do, or you have them count individual pennies, that will take 5 times as long.
considering you do have to go to the Court Office to pay tickets, the places usually have metal detectors, at which point the police will no doubt be more than happy to tell you to turn around and get real money.
Banks can also deny you your pennies, but are less likely to do so, because it is their job to hold onto and change money. they will no doubt think that something is suspect, so I would suggest treading lightly.

You are correct that it is legal tender, however, the part of it being legal tender means that anybody in the U.S. can only charge you in dollars. ( for example, the court can’t force you to pay them in pesos or euros! )
Also, the agency could easily announce that they don’t accept cash and require you to produce a check or money order.
However, Dont be belligerent about it. Even a minor scene in a court of law could put you in jail for 24 hrs.
no, a bank won’t deny your pennies. But keep in mind that nobody in this country is required to do anything, so you can’t force your pennies on them. Just like your employer can’ pay your wages in pennies. If its not law, it could probably be covered under common law.
matt | Aug 02, 2009
I mean it is legal, but im pretty sure courts reserve the right to deny your form of payment for one reson or another, remember sometimes there are people waiting in line to pay their tickets too so be curdious to them.
